The last confirmed sighting of a Huia was in 1907, and a possible sighting in 1924.

By the time the Europeans arrived, this bird was already very low in numbers. The most striking difference in the features of the male and female bird was the bills: males had shorter, stout, straighter bills for chiselling wood, while females’ bills were long, thin and curved downwards for probing into crevices. The male was also significantly larger than the female.

The Huia was a quiet, social bird. It was monogamous and pairs probably paired for life. They were usually found in breeding pairs, although groups of four or more were also sighted.

The birds moved between the forests in both the upper and lower regions, depending on the time of year. Huia ate adult insects, grubs and spiders, as well as the fruits of a small number of native plants.

Not much is actually known about the Huia as they were almost extinct when first sighted by the Europeans. What is known is that the Maori regarded the Huia as tapu (sacred), and the wearing of its skin or feathers was reserved for people of high status.

Many well-known Maori paintings depict Maori chiefs with the distinctive Huia tail feathers decorating the back of the head.

Ingredients

Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Elaeis Guineensis (Palm) Oil, Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Seed Oil, Glycerine, Aqua, Sodium Hydroxide, Sorbitol, Cocoamidopropyl Hydroxysultaine, Propylene Glycol (Vegetable Derived), Sorbitan Oleate, Hydrolysed Oat Protein, Moringa Oil, Fragrance (English Garden), Water-soluble Paper

Palm Oil: No – RSPO Palm

Vegan: Yes

Tested on animals: No

Contains GMO: No

Country of origin: USA

A glimpse of the rich New Zealand bird life embedded within these beautiful soaps.
