Description

A glimpse of the rich New Zealand bird life embedded within these beautiful soaps. They are an ideal gift for that special person. The beautiful paintings within the soaps are the creation of Desiree McLaggan, who lives in rural Gordonton, in the North Waikato Region of New Zealand. All these soaps contain Moringa Oil, a valuable additive for your skin.  Moringa is well known for its soothing and healing properties for the skin. The fragrance is the delightful scent of an Old English Garden and is infused into the whole soap.

The magic of these soaps is that the picture stays in the soap for the lifetime of the soap. If they get a little dull when the soap is dry, rinse under water and the picture pops back as clear and bright as the day you unwrapped it.

These soaps make a wonderful gift for friends overseas, Mother’s Day, Birthdays, and Christmas.

These soaps are made in New Zealand using local and imported Ingredients and crafted by Moringa Meadows Homestead based in Pukekawa, New Zealand.

The Huia

This is an extinct species of the New Zealand wattlebird, endemic to the North Island of New Zealand. The last confirmed sighting of a Huia was in 1907, and a possible sighting in 1924.

By the time the Europeans arrived, this bird was already very low in numbers. The most striking difference in the features of the male and female bird was the bills: males had shorter, stout, straighter bills for chiselling wood, while females’ bills were long, thin and curved downwards for probing into crevices. The male was also significantly larger than the female.

The Huia was a quiet, social bird. It was monogamous and pairs probably paired for life. They were usually found in breeding pairs, although groups of four or more were also sighted.

The birds moved between the forests in both the upper and lower regions, depending on the time of year. Huia ate adult insects, grubs and spiders, as well as the fruits of a small number of native plants.

Not much is actually known about the Huia as they were almost extinct when first sighted by the Europeans. What is known is that the Maori regarded the Huia as tapu (sacred), and the wearing of its skin or feathers was reserved for people of high status.

Many well-known Maori paintings depict Maori chiefs with the distinctive Huia tail feathers decorating the back of the head.
