Description
A glimpse of the rich New Zealand bird life embedded within these beautiful soaps. They are an ideal gift for that special person. The beautiful paintings within the soaps are the creation of Desiree McLaggan, who lives in rural Gordonton, in the North Waikato Region of New Zealand. All these soaps contain Moringa Oil, a valuable additive for your skin. Moringa is well known for its soothing and healing properties for the skin. The fragrance is the delightful scent of an Old English Garden and is infused into the whole soap.
The magic of these soaps is that the picture stays in the soap for the lifetime of the soap. If they get a little dull when the soap is dry, rinse under water and the picture pops back as clear and bright as the day you unwrapped it.
These soaps make a wonderful gift for friends overseas, Mother’s Day, Birthdays, and Christmas.
These soaps are made in New Zealand using local and imported Ingredients and crafted by Moringa Meadows Homestead based in Pukekawa, New Zealand.
The Pukeko
The Pūkeko is found throughout New Zealand. By the 1980’s it was estimated there were approx. 600,00 or more Pūkeko in both the North and South Islands.
They are mostly vegetarian and can be regularly found grazing along the roadside and drainage ditches. They prefer to run and hide when confronted with danger. However, they are capable of flying and can fly long distances. They are also very capable and strong swimmers.
The Pūkeko has a bright red frontal shield with a deep violet breast plumage. The birds are known to live in permanent social groups in order to protect their territory. Birds can nest in monogamous pairs, polyandrous, polygynandrous or polygynous groups. Any of these groups may also have non-breeding helpers. All the eggs within these groups are laid in one nest (usually 4-6 eggs per female) with the chicks raised by all members in the group. The incubation is mostly performed by the males.
The males are very territorial and will often be very aggressive to neighbouring birds. They will often puff out their chests, bite and kick each other. They have few predators, and those that try to attack them or their chicks often end up on the losing side.
Pūkeko are a very vocal bird with a variety of calling sounds.
They have often been called a pest as they eat garden vegetables and damage tree planting programmes. On the Tiritiri Matangi and Mana Islands the solution to this problem was to build plastic tube clouches to protect the tree seedlings.
In order to protect the grasslands and water supply of agricultural land the birds are occasionally culled to lower the population numbers.
Their blue breast feathers are prized as fly-tying feathers a nd for use in Maori cloaks.
